The pilot study was completed in December 2007 and demonstrated the feasibility of our approach as well as the acceptability. The pilot study was funded by the Groupe de Recherche en Gestion Thérapeutique de l’Université de Montréal, as well as by Health Canada (Programme de Contribution aux Pratiques Exemplaires; this program was later cancelled by the Ministry of Health.
The PERSISTANCE program was offered to 40 adult patients who had begun an antidepressant treatment. The rate of participation was very high (92.5%). Out of the 40 patients only 4 (10.5%) had dropped out of the program due to adverse effects of the treatment. The results proved that the program was beneficial due to the personalized support offered by a nurse hence diminishing the patient’s sense of isolation. In addition, the physicians further confirmed the benefit of the follow-up letter and information modules adapted for the general public.
